WordPress Development Setup

Last updated on April 15, 2015 by Sal Ferrarello

Inspired by Sam Hotchkiss’s post What’s your WordPress Development Setup?, I decided to give a quick run down of the tools I use as a WordPress developer.

My WordPress Development Setup

Hardware

  • 2013 MacBook Pro 13″ Retina with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD
for me this machine is the perfect combination of screen size, speed, portability, and power
  • 27″ Monoprice Monitor
  • Monoprice Mechanical Keyboard – I love the feel of a mechanical keyboard and this was the cheapest one I could find
  • Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical Mouse – D58-00026 – This mouse just feels right and the fact it has a wire means I never have to worry about batteries or a charge

Software

  • Git with Iron Code Git Enhancements for Git status in the command-line prompt and tab completion
  • VVV with a modified Custom file for port forwarding, which allows me to preview sites on other devices
  • MacVim as my editor with my chosen Vim customizations and plugins
  • Quicksilver Application Launcher – while everyone else seems to be using Alfred, I’ve not yet found a compelling reason to change
  • Google Chrome as my browser of choice
  • Dropbox
  • KeePassX for password management (coupled with Dropbox and the iOS version for access on the go)
  • Adobe Photoshop CC
  • Cyberduck for SFTP/FTP

Online Services

  • Harvest – for time tracking and billing
  • Xero – for financial bookkeeping
  • Feedbin RSS Reader
