Words I Knowingly Mispronounce

AT-AT

Star Wars imperial walkers. The AT-AT official pronunciation rhymes with “hat hat”. My primary issue with this phonetic pronunciation rather than my preferred speaking each letter (Ay Tee Ay Tee) is how to then pronounce the other walkers like the AT-ST (would it be “at Street”?).

gif

I know the official pronunciation is “jif” (like the peanut butter) but I still say “gif”.

Instapot

The official name is “Instant Pot” however like many others, I prefer “Insta Pot” even though I recognize this is incorrect.

OS X

While the official pronunciation is “O-S ten”, I prefer the O-S-X pronunciation. If they wanted it called, “O-S ten” I think it would have made more sense to write it OS 10.

Porsche

While Ferdinand Porsche prounced his last name “Porsha”, I still subscribe to the popular US one syllable pronunciation “porsch”.

XAMPP

The official pronunciation of this project is “Shamp” (you can hear it for yourself by playing the video on their homepage). I’ve been familiar with this project for some time and didn’t realize I had strong feelings about the pronunciation, having heard both “X-amp” and “zamp” without raising an eyebrow. However, “Shamp” does not appear on my personal list of pronunciations.
