DIG and WHOIS returning different name servers

Last updated on August 27, 2018 by Sal Ferrarello

You can lookup name servers with whois and dig NS.

e.g.
whois salferrarello.com
and
dig NS salferrarello.com
in the case of my domain, the same name servers are returned

ns-1500.awsdns-59.org.
ns-1883.awsdns-43.co.uk.
ns-244.awsdns-30.com.
ns-603.awsdns-11.net

Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Sometimes different values are returned.

The canonical (official) values are those returned by dig NS
